Wildlife Safaris following the Seasonal Transition of Bighorn Sheep
Bighorn Sheep Package offered November 7th through November 30th, 2022
Thursday Arrival Only
Three of the world’s longest land migrations happen here in the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Join Spring Creek Ranch’s exclusive Naturalist for an intimate view of these seasonal transitions.
Winter is approaching and snow in the high mountains is pushing migratory mammals to their winter homes on the valley floor. Thousands of elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and other animals reveal themselves in masses, giving way to some of the most fascinating observable behaviors in our ecosystem. Along with the movement of these migratory animals, this is also the season of the bighorn sheep rut, a spectacle of head butting and horn locking that can be heard from miles away. Join Spring Creek Ranch’s experienced Naturalist and bear witness to these fascinating seasonal behaviors. Seek to understand the culture interface of these migrations as we also explore the connection of ancient native people to these patterns through art and petroglyphs dating up to 4,000 years ago.

Day 1
After arriving in Jackson via air or ground transportation, join our Resident Naturalist in the Ranch House for a welcome reception and presentation.
Day 2
Enjoy breakfast amidst sweeping views of the Teton mountain range. At 9am your guide will pick you up at your accommodations for a safari into Grand Teton National Park and the National Elk Refuge. Animal movements are abundant during this time of migration. Surrounded by magnificent landscapes and history, you will be on the lookout for elk, moose, birds of prey, bighorn sheep, and other fascinating fauna. Mid-way through the day the group will explore the exhibits at the National Museum of Wildlife Art and see artistic interpretations of our observations.
Day 3
After breakfast your guide will pick you up at your accommodations at 9am. Journey through the length of Grand Teton National Park and over the continental divide on Togwotee Pass, passing by several mountain ranges and picturesque vistas. Enjoy lunch at the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center and explore their interactive exhibits. After lunch, you will continue the venture to the Whiskey Basin Wildlife Management Area, home to the largest herd of Bighorn Sheep in the world! This is rut season for the bighorn sheep, so be on the look out for rams butting heads and other dramatic mating displays. In between viewing the bighorns, your Naturalist will guide you along cliff sides dotted with hidden petroglyphs. The Sheep Eater Indians, a Shoshone tribe, made these mysterious drawings in the stone up to 4,000 years ago.
